Do you have the opportunity to study abroad either because
you possess the financial resources or through a univesrsity scholarship? if so,
then you should consult a ranking to know which are the most prestigious
academic universities.
In the eighth edition of this ranking for the second
consecutive year, the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom topped the
list, beating Harvard. The first Latin American is the National Autonomous
University of Mexico (UNAM), which is ranked at 169 of 300.
QS World University Rankings last reported the 300 best
universities worldwide. In the first ten positions you will find universities
from British and U.S.
No German university enters the top 50 despite the efforts
to increase the excellence in this country.
In the world ranking list, the only Latin American universities
are: National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico and University of
São Paulo (Brazil), which they are tied in position 169. Figure 235 Ranked

was ranked 262 and the University of Buenos Aires in place 270.
"The gap between Cambridge and Harvard is very small,
but the ratio of student / faculty of Cambridge helped tip the balance.
Individual attention is one of the key attractions of the tutorial system,
"said Ben Sowter, QS head of research at the international media
University of Cambridge holds the number one spot ahead of
Harvard, while MIT jumps to third ahead of Yale and Oxford. This data reveals
that government and private funding for research focused on technology is
undermining the dominance of traditional universities.
The poor situation of education in Spain is also evidence of
a critical state. Three of the four Spanish universities were among the 300
best in the world, descended significantly in relation to the list of 2010.
Only the Universidad Complutense de Madrid jumped from 269 to 253. The
University of Barcelona was the only center that last year was among the 150 best in the
world, but in 2011 it ranked at 176.
But what criterion is based for this ranking?
There are a number of bibliometric criteria which measures
the number of publications, citations to papers published by the university,
the awards received by students, alumni or teachers, etc.. These figures are
not provided by the university but are developed independently, so they are
more reliable.
Other criteria are considered non bibliometrics. These
figures are provided and managed by universities, and is considered to be more
easily manipulated or hidden. For example, the number of students enrolled, the
number of graduates, the number of courses offered (masters, doctorates, courses, bachelor degrees, etc..). Usually this type of
criteria is larger infrastructure and the budget of the university academic
prestige.
Finally, some subjective criteria include opinion polls, but
as these may be based on prejudice of respondents, they are not to be taken
into account.
